Sint Maarten now has a Padel Tennis club, located in Belair, using the original tennis court of the Belair Beach Resort. Padel is a rapidly growing racket sport, a mix between tennis and squash. The courts are about a quarter of the size of tennis courts, surrounded by glass walls, which are part of the game for bouncing balls back. The rackets are solid paddles, the balls low-pressured tennis balls.
The new club offers two courts, a café, and a pro-shop. Of course, there are restrooms, and showers are an added convenience.
A further attraction is hidden behind the structure of the café: two Pétanque courts invite playing this very French version of Boules.
St. Maarten's tennis players gave the game a try, and it was all thumbs up. Will it be the end of tennis, as someone claimed? Unlikely: as mini-golf didn't end golf but created its niche, Padel will do the same. It is already a big sport, and it will attract new players who don't want to experience the steep learning curve of tennis.
The courts are open from 7 AM to 10 PM. For reservations or more information, call +1 721 545-3890 or +1 721 520-1381
