We ask Inter-Island Elevators, a company specializing in the maintenance and installation of elevators and escalators.
Answer: "You will be surprised! There are over 350 elevators installed on Sint Maarten, including the French side. And most of them are mission-critical equipment. A hotel can not afford to have their elevators shutting down."
Why would an elevator shut down? Is this technology so unreliable?
Answer: "Elevators have been an important feature in tall buildings since 1853 when Elisha Otis presented his invention of the essential safety mechanisms. They are inherently very, very safe now. Part of these safety features is the ability to shut operations down if something is not right."
How does a resort prevent their elevators from giving trouble?
Answer: "With regular maintenance by qualified technicians, downtime will be minimal. However, modern elevators are very complex and contain a lot of electronics. It takes experience to spot a developing problem before it causes a shutdown. Sometimes, it can't be prevented. Let me give you an example. If a bellhop in a hotel bangs the luggage too hard against the elevator doors, it could knock off an important sensor out of alignment. Not good. We need to come and reset the item. Too often, we are called in because there wasn't professional maintenance performed for a while, and we have a lot to do in catching up to bring the unit back to safety standards."
The biggest fear of using elevators is to get stuck for hours. How often does this occur?
Answer: "Hardly ever. And my company offers superfast service. We will be on location within half an hour to solve the situation.
