Two major St. Maarten attractions clash for short-term visitors: There is the fantastic jewelry shopping in the island's capital of Philipsburg. And then there is the surreal airport experience at the end of the runway at Princess Juliana International Airport, where landing jets barely clear Maho Beach and starting aircraft blast the brave souls hanging on to the airport fence. Unfortunately, the average cruise ship visitor's hours on shore are insufficient to cover Philipsburg shopping and airplane spotting.

But we have a solution to report for anyone desiring to shop and watch the planes:
Right next to Maho Beach (the airplane beach) and only a few hundred feet of walking distance is the Maho Shopping Plaza, with a good selection of jewelers, cigar and souvenir shops, boutiques, cafés, restaurants, bars, and more.

Significantly, the jewelry shopping experience is far more relaxed than in Philipsburg. The stores are geared toward resort guests, who have the time to browse, walk off, ponder and return later to purchase. Pressure sales are not favored in this environment. Overhead is lower in this location, and the prices for jewelry reflect this. For us island residents, Maho shopping has become the preferred way of finding beautiful pieces of jewelry for our loved ones; this is why we highly recommend reputable jewelers at the Maho Shopping Plaza.
