For those who enjoy 'dry land' sporting activities as well as the multitude of water sports on offer, St. Maarten/St. Martin has excellent facilities. Fitness fanatics don't worry, as the island has many well-equipped gyms with a good range of strength training equipment and cardiovascular machines. The Country Club at Port de Plaisance  is a full service health and sport facility and has been praised by specialists as the most advanced spa and gym in the Caribbean! There you can train with reknowned fitness specialist and international martial arts competitor Dayana Mota. There are even classes for the infamous "Insanity" fitness program!

These can be found on both the French and Dutch sides and offer reasonable daily rates or, if you're on an extended holiday, you can apply for weekly or monthly membership. Many of the gyms provide personal training, and group classes in various martial arts, aerobics and dancing, and most of the larger hotels have their own fitness facilities including tennis courts and swimming pools, so you can work off the previous nights' feast!

If you're looking for something more specialized, your hotel activity desk can help you find the right place for you.

Runners and joggers are a common sight on the island, as there are numerous good routes and plenty of hills! However, be extremely careful on the roads and don't underestimate the tropical climate! The best times of day for running are before 9am or after 4:30pm before and after the heat of the day.

Ideally suited to the island's topography, Mountain Biking has rapidly gained popularity on the island. Whether you prefer easy roaming, hard cross-country or crazy downhill racing, it is a simple process to rent first class equipment or secure the help of experienced local guides. Some of the most favored circuits are Cay Bay, Mullet Bay and St. Jean at Bellevue.

If you prefer some tranquil competition on the green, St. Maarten's 18-hole golf course is located on the edge of the stunning Mullet Bay beach and is open year round. There are also two new courses planned for the island so watch this space! Whatever your sporting interest, the island is sure to provide you with the challenges you need.
